Parties & County Petition for Legitimation

Important — Georgia law: In Georgia, a child born to unmarried parents has no legal father until legitimation. Signing a Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity (AOP) at the hospital establishes paternity for birth certificates and child support — but it does NOT give the father any custody or visitation rights. You must file a Petition for Legitimation in Superior Court to become the child's legal father with parental rights. O.C.G.A. § 19-7-22.
